From 1 July 2021, road vehicle and motorcycle recalls will be published by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development and Communications (DITRDC).
Road safety reforms
On 1 July 2021, the new Road Vehicle Standards Act 2018 (RVS) is replacing the existing Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989.
The RVS reforms cover voluntary and compulsory recalls of motorcycle and road vehicles and approved road vehicle components.
Suppliers who voluntarily recall road vehicles (e.g. cars, motorcycles, caravans, commercial vehicles, campers, trailers) or approved road vehicle components should notify the department. The DITRDC website will publish the recall.
The ACCC will no longer publish these recalls. Current recalls on the Product Safety Australia website will transition to the DITRDC’s recalls website.
For riders: searching for motorcycle recalls
If you are searching for a motorcycle recall you will need to visit –
- Up until and including 30 June 2021, consumers can continue to visit the Product Safety Australia website for motorcycle recall notices.
- From 1 July 2021, consumers will be able to access new recalls from the department’s recalls webpage. This was unknown at the time of writing, however we will update this article when available.
This means between now and 30 August, you will need to check both websites for any past and present recalls. However, from 1 September 2021, all past and present recalls will transition to DITRDC’s recalls website.
For suppliers: submitting motorcycle recalls
Up until and including 30 June 2021, motorcycle recalls should be submitted to the ACCC via the Submit a recall form.
Note that recalls submitted close to 30 June 2021 may not be published on the Product Safety Australia website. Any unpublished recall notices will be transferred to the department to finalise and publish, post 1 July 2021.
From 1 July 2021, suppliers must submit their recalls using the DITRDC’s Road Vehicle Regulator (ROVER) system.
Takata airbag recall
The ACCC will continue to administer the compulsory Takata airbag recall.

Recalls remaining on the Product Safety Australia website
The following types of recalls will remain on the Product Safety Australia website
• any vehicles that are not road vehicles but are classified as consumer goods (e.g. golf carts, miniature motor bikes, motorised mobility devices, quad bikes).
• any consumer vehicle accessories (i.e. any after-market part that does not intend to integrate into the road vehicle). This includes child car restraint, portable ramp, recovery strap, bike carrier.
• caravans and campers where the safety issue does not relate to the vehicle itself but with human occupation (e.g. fridge, stove in caravan).
